How didn't I notice this before I torqued the heads down?

I'm going to scavenge some matching caps from my old heads. I have three spring caps that look like this.

Not when you don't have the tools *tear

Suggestion Only: As you have already done the hard work, why not replace them all?

I don't have new parts. I'm swapping the broken cups with some old cups off of the previous set of heads. I'll redo everything in the future when I have a budget larger than a highschooler making minimum wage.

You can most likely borrow a spring compression tool from the local auto parts store. But, if you have a spare C-Clamp hanging around, you can modify it to work. It's not the safest thing in the world, and if renting the tool is cheap, probably not worth it, but just a suggestion.

Ouch! But if you are going to replace them with your old ones make sure that the rubber inside of them is still somewhat good. I made the mistake of running with my old ones again after the engine rebuild and I am currently picking up big, dry rubber chunks from under my valve covers :(

I don't know that those caps are absolutely necessary if you have the right valve seals. Did you replace the valve stem seals, and if you did, what were they and what did you replace them with?
